If you’ve ever looked down mid-pump and thought, “Is that supposed to stretch that much?” You are not alone.
One of the most common (and least talked about) pumping concerns is something called elastic nipples. And while the name can sound alarming, it’s actually just a variation of normal anatomy.
At Zomee, we believe in real talk, real education, and real solutions from one mom to another. Let’s break it down.
What Are Elastic Nipples?
Elastic nipples refer to nipple tissue that stretches significantly into the pump flange tunnel during pumping. While all nipples expand somewhat with suction, elastic nipples may:
- Stretch far into (or even to the end of) the flange tunnel
- Rub against the sides of the tunnel
- Pull in more areola than expected
- Feel sore or uncomfortable after pumping
A variety of factors can influence how elastic nipple tissue becomes over time. These may include:
- Natural changes from pregnancy and breastfeeding,
- Age
- Sun exposure to the chest or upper breast area
- Lifestyle factors such as smoking
With each pregnancy, nipple tissue may also become more elastic than before.
Important: Elastic nipples are not wrong or abnormal. They’re simply a variation of normal anatomy and with the right flange fit and pump setup, many moms can pump comfortably and effectively.
Why Does Flange Fit Matter So Much?
When your flange size fit isn’t quite right - especially if it’s too large - elastic tissue can be pulled in excessively. This can lead to:
- Reduced milk output
- Swelling
- Pain or sensitivity
- Longer pumping sessions
The goal is simple: Your nipple should move freely in the tunnel without excessive areola being pulled in.
The right fit = better comfort + better output.
How Zomee Supports Moms with Elastic Nipples
1: The Most Flange Sizes Available in a Wearable
Our Mother’s Nature™ W1 Wearable Breast Pump was designed with real feedback from pumping moms, including those with elastic nipple tissue.
Because one size never fits all, the W1 offers more flange sizing options than many wearables in its category, helping you dial in a more precise fit instead of “making do” with standard sizing. In addition, the shields and inserts are made from soft, flexible silicone, which can help create a gentler, more comfortable seal during pumping especially for moms who experience more nipple stretch.
2: The Zomee Perfect Fit Promise™
We know flange sizing can feel confusing. That’s why we created our Perfect Fit Promise™, so you’re never stuck with a size that doesn’t work for your body.
If your flange doesn’t feel right, we’ll help you find the size you need.
Comfort isn’t optional, it is essential.

Additional Tips for Elastic Nipples
Here are a few mom-approved adjustments that can help:
- Try a smaller flange size than you think you need
- Lower suction (more isn’t always better)
- Make sure your nipple is centered in the flange before turning on the pump
- Consider shorter pumping intervals if swelling occurs
- Use the cooling setting of our Warming & Cooling Lactation Massager after pumping to help soothe and reduce post-pump swelling
- Some moms also find relief using silver nursing cups or shields such as our Silver Soothing Nipple Shields
If discomfort continues, a lactation consultant can provide personalized guidance. The International Lactation Consultant Association can help you find one near you.
A Kind Reminder, Mama 🩵
Elastic nipples are common. You’re not “doing it wrong” and you’re definitely not alone. Pumping should not be painful, and you deserve products that work with your body, not against it.
At Zomee, every product decision we make is rooted in listening to moms. That’s why the W1 offers expanded sizing, customizable suction, and our Perfect Fit Promise™, because your journey is unique, and your pump should support that.
